Happy reading!

NB What do you think of this bridge's warning?

How clear is that ! And only 10ft clearance too. Nobody seems to have hit it yet.

Who can guess where it is? No prizes though, just fame !

  1. Whitehouse Bridges, Swindon - the signs haven't always worked though as doubledecker buses sometimes tried to pass under when I was a kid.

  2. I can tell you for definate that the yellow paint, wasp stripes, the electronic flashing signs which (are supposed to) go off when an over - height vehicle passes a laser sensor at the entrance to the road and the jumbo size circular restriction sign - does not make the blindest bit of difference when it comes to some people. Last vehicle to hit it was a Luton van a couple of months ago I think.

Of course, the expensive electronic signs haven't been maintained properly for some time now as they constantly malfunction, so it's no wonder really. Swindon Borough Council are pretty stupid.

  3. I think the nearest sensor operated sign is from the A38/A4091 junction near Bromsgrove towards Stoke Prior.

  4. Whitehouse Road, Swindon, is purportedly the most frequently hit bridge in the country. At one time it used to get one hit per month. Aren’t the words big enough? What part of LOW BRIDGE don’t drivers understand?

The number of tracks carried by the bridge has substantially reduced over the years, so only the innermost girders carry trains. The outer girders are redundant but offer flank protection, so that Network Rail do not need to stop the trains every time. You will see from Google Street View just how tight the clearance is for a single deck bus.

My wife would be OK if she walked straight down the middle, but not me!!!

    1. You'd have to limbo your way under that!

    2. If you find it on Google Street View, the other end is "No Entry" with a car waiting to pull out!
